The insane release clause United would have to pay for Atletico duo

Will Manchester United’s spending ever end?

Jose Mourinho was given license to splash out on the likes of Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the summer, yet his side sit sixth in the Premier League table.

Undeterred by the apparently limited success of this policy, he is already lining up his next big targets, both of whom happen to be at Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils have made no secret of their admiration for Antoine Griezmann, but the Times have suggested they are also monitoring team-mate Saul Niguez.

Griezmann is easily in the world’s top five best players, while they could do with Niguez in central midfield to appease the pressure on the ageing Michael Carrick and the frankly hapless Marouane Fellaini.

Perhaps the newspaper’s most interesting revelation is how much United will have to pay for the pair.

After both Niguez and Griezmann signed contracts until 2021 last summer, they have release clauses totalling £145million.

You’d think that would put United off, but they reportedly believe they can negotiate those fees down.

Griezmann seems torn on whether to leave Atleti, while Niguez has been tight-lipped on his own future, but if Mourinho could tempt them to Old Trafford, it’d be a hugely significant statement.
