Arsenal want La Liga left-back to replace Gibbs and Monreal

Arsenal are in the market for a new left-back as Arsene Wenger looks to increase competition in his squad.

The Gunners’ defence is generally looking strong – at least Shkodran Mustafi is fit – but the left full-back position is the one area which could do with strengthening.

It seems the once-promising Kieran Gibbs will not be offered a new deal when his remaining 18 months are up, while 31-year-old Nacho Monreal’s poor marking of Raheem Sterling for Manchester City’s winner on Sunday suggests his best years may be behind him.

Although Arsenal have lost just three games this season, they’ve conceded four goals in their last two games.

The Mirror have it that Wenger has personally earmarked Valencia’s Jose Gaya as the man he wants to bring in to solve those problems, and the 21-year-old could force Gibbs and Monreal to up their game if they want a place in the starting XI.

The newspaper also points out that if Wenger is still making transfer plans for the summer, then it suggests he won’t be walking away at the end of the current season – as was widely expected when his contract is up.
