Steven Gerrard’s retirement hasn’t exactly come as a shock, but it’s still a momentous moment for the Liverpool legend.
The iconic midfielder made 710 appearances for the Reds and won nine trophies at the club, including the Champions League.
Within minutes of his announcement, fans were calling for his return to Merseyside as a coach, something Jurgen Klopp has previously admitted is a possibility.
And according to the Mirror, Gerrard has his heart set on the move, having turned down the manager’s job at League One MK Dons last week because he wasn’t ready.
Working alongside Klopp could be the perfect way for him to learn the ropes, and he could be coming along at the perfect time with the club flying high in the Premier League.
Liverpool are willing to hold informal talks with the great, but it’s not thought anything will be agreed before Christmas because they have too many games to concentrate on.
It’s possible the icon could combine any coaching job at Liverpool with a similar arrangement in the England set-up, but again, it will have to wait, as Gareth Southgate has not been officially appointed yet and needs time to choose his staff.
Regardless, it’s looking like Gerrard is on his way back to English football in some capacity, and Liverpool fans simply can’t wait.
