Jurgen Klopp makes u-turn over “silly” mistake

Jurgen Klopp is staying humble despite his early progress with Liverpool.

It’s only a little over a year since he took over from Brendan Rodgers on Merseyside, but he’s already been forced to admit he’s made one “silly” mistake.

As such, the Reds boss is now prepared to reverse his decision not to give his players time off over the international break.

“When I came here the players had a few days off. I changed it and said: ‘How can they have three or four days off or something?’”, he said, via the Independent.

“It was a silly decision. It’s only because I was not used to it. Now we are proper English coaches, we know about the fixtures, the intensity of the next few months.

“Each possibility for a little break, you have to use. That’s what we have to do.

“They still have a programme – to train and stay fit. Not all of them can go wherever they want because if you’re a bit injured you have to be here.

“But a real training session does not make sense with five or six players. A few days off and then we’ll start again.”

Liverpool are one of the few title contenders who can benefit from a lack of European football this season, so it would be pretty inexcusable if they were then tired out from having too little rest.

In Germany, it’s common for coaches to work with their players throughout the break, but national coach Joachim Low’s decision to rest Mesut Ozil could be a sign that the balance is swinging the other way.

Several of Klopp’s first team stars, including Dejan Lovren and Loris Karius, are not involved with their international sides over the next fortnight.

If Liverpool didn’t already look close to unstoppable, then it’s going to be interesting to see how they fare when Premier League action returns in a few weeks time.

A trip to Southampton beckons on November 19.
