Almost everything about West Ham screams ‘crisis’ this season.
If it’s not fans fighting amongst themselves at the London Stadium, it’s their woeful form on the pitch which has seen them left fourth-bottom in the Premier League.
A 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Stoke at the weekend has only intensified that crisis.
West Ham fans could be forgiven for thinking it can’t get much worse, but the reality is that it might be about to.
According to the Mirror, the club are now set to hold immediate talks with Dimitri Payet after getting wind of rumours he wants to leave in January.
The France superstar reportedly told a French TV station he hadn’t “closed the door” on exiting East London, though he confirmed he hadn’t actually had an offer from Paris Saint-Germain, one of his most likely destinations.
The 29-year-old may well be disappointed that some fans have turned on him, though he’s undoubtedly not at fault for their poor performances. Slaven Bilic is clinging onto a job right now, but he also needs to focus his energies on keeping hold of his prize asset.
Payet only signed a new deal worth £125,000 a week in January, but that’s when the Hammers looked like competing for the European places.
Now, it’s a very different story. His standout performances at Euro 2016 made it almost inevitable he wouldn’t be at the club for much longer, but West Ham now surely have to do everything they can to convince him to stay.
