Could Dimitar Berbatov be heading back to the Premier League?

Dimitar Berbatov is targeting a shock return to the Premier League at the age of 35, he has told BBC Radio 5 live.

The Bulgarian was at Wembley to watch old side Spurs in the Champions League on Wednesday night, and he has been a free agent since his release from Greek side PAOK in June.

It’s clear he’s still got a taste for English football, having won the league twice with Manchester United and later moved onto Fulham.

“When you’ve played in the Premier League, you don’t want to play anywhere else”, he admitted.

“In this stage of my career I know where I am – I would happily play for a team where they use my experience and my knowledge. I can help young players develop and make the team stronger. In the end it’s all about helping the team play.”

Those comments will undoubtedly alert a number of clubs, even if he’s no longer the striker he once was.

The notoriously sulky forward scored 27 goals across two seasons at Spurs, forging a brilliant partnership with Robbie Keane before earning a move to Old Trafford. The Lilywhites could certainly have done with a player like that at Wembley.

At United, he added to that tally with a further 48 goals in 108 games.

Berbatov has always been something of an enigma, but he’s made no bones about the fact he’d love a return to the Premier League, and as he’s a free agent, he’s surely worth taking a gamble on.

Perfect for the Woodward / Mourinho over 30s Red Devils – Schweinsteiger, RRooney, Zlatan, Berbatov, Probably can also score Gerrard, Ashley Cole and Keane.
    Wow. “Be still, my heart”
