Per Mertesacker’s injury could prove to be hugely significant as the clock ticks down on his Arsenal career.
The World Cup winner hasn’t played this season and isn’t expected to feature before the New Year, allowing new signing Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny to form a partnership, with youngster Rob Holding as back-up.
All that means it’s going to be difficult for Mertesacker to make a return, and it is believed he is now considering a return to his native Germany.
The Independent report that his old club Hannover are monitoring the situation, while Werder Bremen is another name being mentioned in connection with the centre-back.
“I am a person who likes to create options for himself,” Mertesacker admits.
Hannover are currently ploughing away in the second division, but if they can achieve a return to the Bundesliga, it doesn’t seem out of the question that Mertesacker could be heading out of the Emirates.
