They say you can’t buy loyalty in football.
Manchester City have characteristically spent big this summer, Pep Guardiola using John Stones, Nolito, and Ilkay Gundogan to strengthen his squad.
The latter of those, Gundogan, has only started to appear, having arrived at the club with a knee injury that ruled him out of Germany’s Euro 2016 campaign.
Despite his City career still being in its infancy, however, he has already started speaking about returning to Borussia Dortmund, the club he came from.
To be fair, Gundogan has clarified, as per Bild, that he is not keen to return too soon, as that would mean he had been a failure at City.
Yet, he insisted:
“If I’m 29 or 30, I do not know if [Dortmund would] still want me. Basically, I would not exclude the possibility, but now I have other big targets.”
The box-to-box midfielder certainly wouldn’t be the first Dortmund man to make a triumphant return, and could follow in the footsteps of the likes of Mario Gotze, who came back from Bayern Munich in the summer.
As for now, Gundogan needs to focus on getting into a fiercely competitive City midfield and helping them to the Premier League – because as it stands, they are huge favourites.
