‘Come-and-get-me’ pleas are becoming more and more common in football, but it’s rarer for players to warn their suitors not to bother.
That’s exactly what Andres Iniesta appears to have done, however, by telling Pep Guardiola he won’t be tempted to move to Manchester City.
The Barcelona superstar knows Guardiola well, of course, from their time together at the Nou Camp, but while City will have hoped his appointment could draw some giants from the Catalan club, that’s just not going to work on Iniesta.
The Spanish magician intends to stay at Barca for the rest of his career, like many of the legends he has played with. Xavi, his former midfield partner, moved to Qatar in his thirties, but otherwise, it is common practice for Barca’s players to retire rather than move on.
“I think Guardiola already knows what I think and what I want; my wish is to finish my career in Barcelona,” Iniesta said, as per the Sun.
In fact, the 32-year-old is hoping for a new deal, so that should put to bed any lingering speculation linking him with a sensational move to the Etihad.
