Jose Mourinho has never been shy of playing the blame game.
The Manchester United manager is in full swing at the moment, going for referees, his own left-back, and basically his entire squad after losing three games in a row.
The Red Devils have a chance to put that right – sort of – by beating League One Northampton in the EFL Cup, and it’s expected that the Portuguese will only make two or three changes, such is his desperation to avoid an upset.
Luke Shaw will be pleased to know that Mourinho has now found a new reason for United’s recent failings – himself? Of course not.
According to the Mirror, the Special One has been going around telling friends that predecessor Louis van Gaal is still causing problems, as the players have a mental hangover from his terrible tactics.
To be fair, Mourinho has had most of the summer to get rid of any lingering memories of the Dutchman, but he still clearly wants more time. What is most baffling is how Van Gaal has managed to affect the likes of Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan who weren’t even at the club when he was in charge, but maybe the former United chief is just that good at alienating people.
There will come a time when Mourinho’s excuses no longer hold sway, and if United don’t beat first Northampton, and then Leicester at the weekend, he may have to admit that it’s just not working.
