Harry Kane’s ankle injury is neither good news for Tottenham or England fans.
Not only will the striker miss several of Spurs’ key Premier League and Champions League games, he is set to miss out on the national side’s World Cup qualifier against Malta on October 8th.
Of course, this is far more serious for Mauricio Pochettino than it is for England boss Sam Allardyce. Tottenham have limited options up front, and will be relying on new boy Vincent Janssen, still yet to score a goal, to replace their star striker.
Allardyce, on the other hand, will be able to experiment with a new forward – and former Arsenal hero Ian Wright has already decided who that should be.
Writing in the Sun, he insists that Troy Deeney has earned a call-up with his form for Watford, even if playing for an “unfashionable” club makes it harder for him to be noticed.
“He scores goals, he holds the ball up superbly with his strength, he has quality and composure,” he adds.
“Look at the goal he scored against West Ham. That would not look out of place in Spain’s La Liga with the brilliance of his touch.
“And you have to wonder… would Odion Ighalo have scored so many goals last year had he not had Deeney on his shoulder? I suspect not.”
Deeney has scored twice and assisted one already this season to add to his 13 goals over the course of the last campaign. His is a name often talked about in connection with England, but it is down to Allardyce to now be bold enough to give him his chance.
