Cesc Fabregas looked like a man back from the dead in Chelsea’s 4-2 win over Leicester on Tuesday night.
The midfielder, who has been largely sidelined by Antonio Conte since his arrival in the dugout, scored two extra-time goals to send the Blues through after they had been 2-0 down.
The problem for the Spain international so far this season has been the intensity of competition in the midfield. The signing of N’Golo Kante and the simultaneous revival of Nemanja Matic has pushed him down the pecking order.
Prior to the Leicester game, AS were reporting that Sevilla were the latest club interested in luring him away from Stamford Bridge.
That may well be the case, but the question remains over whether Fabregas will stay and fight for his place.
The former Arsenal and Barcelona star offers more going forward than Matic, which could make him the ideal partner for Kante.
However, given that he’s now 29 and entering the last few years of his peak ability, it’s unlikely he’ll settle for a place on the bench, or coming in and out of the side.
Conte may have plenty to think about after Tuesday’s performance, but it could well be the case that he’ll be on his way back to La Liga come January.
