Just when Tottenham were looking so promising, their season has been turned upside down.
The Lilywhites are still unbeaten in the Premier League, but they are now facing a potential goal drought after the news that Harry Kane has been ruled out with ankle ligament damage.
The sight of the striker being stretchered off in the 1-0 win over Sunderland horrified White Hart Lane and no doubt Mauricio Pochettino too – with speculation immediately beginning as to how many games their main man will miss.
Kane underwent two scans after the game, but that doesn’t appear to have shed much light on the situation. Indeed, if it has, Spurs certainly aren’t talking about it publicly.
Pochettino hasn’t really eased fans’ fears after admitting, via the BBC, he didn’t “want to put a timeframe on it”.
That is only going to lead to further speculation. Given that the ankle isn’t broken, Kane should be out for a maximum of two months, but that’s hardly good news.
An eight-week absence would see him miss games against Gillingham, Middlesbrough, CSKA Moscow, Man City, West Brom, Bayer Leverkusen, Bournemouth, and Leicester. It’s quite a list.
The target, surely, has to be for him to return for the North London derby at the Emirates on 6th November – but his injury could already have had a devastating effect on Spurs’ season by then.
