Premier League: 10 things we learned this weekend

Rooney

Another weekend of Premier League action has come and gone, and we may be just a little bit closer to finding out how the table is going to shape up.

Despite it being so early on in the season, serious cracks are starting to show at Stoke, Sunderland, and West Ham – the three teams occupying the relegation zone.

And while City reign supreme with five wins out of five, United are looking a long way off the pace.

Here are ten things we learned:

10 – Jack Wilshere’s at Bournemouth for a reason. The Arsenal loanee was given his first start at his new club against Manchester City, giving him the perfect chance to shine against the big boys. He failed.

9 – Liverpool are serious contenders. Jurgen Klopp’s side are a little erratic, and they might not go all the way. A 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge is just the latest indicator that they shouldn’t be written off, though.

8 – David Moyes and Mark Hughes are already clinging onto their jobs. Neither Sunderland or Stoke have won a game yet, and for Hughes, a 4-0 drubbing by Crystal Palace showed his players have completely lost their heads.

7 – Granit Xhaka wasn’t such a bad signing after all. A lovely goal from the Arsenal midfielder helped him to silence his critics after a difficult start to life in North London.

6 – Southampton have what it takes to get out of trouble. They’ve been hit hard by Ronald Koeman’s departure, but a scrappy 1-0 win over Swansea gave them a vital three points.

5 – Everton are the dark horses. They didn’t spend ridiculous money in the summer, but Koeman has made such a difference. The likes of United and City grab the headlines, but the Toffees sit in second place – somehow completely under the radar.

4 – Tottenham really do need Harry Kane. The number of chances they wasted against Sunderland just showed they don’t have enough prolific goalscorers in their side, so they’ll be praying his injury isn’t serious.

3 – Antonio Conte can be too clever for his own good. Chelsea’s defenders clearly didn’t know what system they were playing in, hence their shambolic marking in the run-up to Dejan Lovren’s goal.

2 – City are so close to being the finished article. Even without Sergio Aguero, they scored another four, so at the moment, it’s difficult to see past them for the title.

1 – Wayne Rooney is finished. The stats don’t lie – no shots on target against Watford, and no tackles either. The combination of the two shows that even in the midfield, the skipper just doesn’t contribute and Mourinho will have no choice but to drop him soon.
