Phil Jones’ Manchester United future is looking more and more uncertain after the defender was ruled out of the Europa League defeat to Feyenoord.
The Sun report that Jose Mourinho was, in fact, planning to give the former England international his first start of the season, but yet another injury prevented Jones from appearing in the 1-0 loss in Rotterdam.
United have confirmed, via their official website, that the 24-year-old has sustained further damage to his knee ligaments, which could rule him out for several weeks.
Unless something changes dramatically, it’s going to be hugely difficult for the centre-back to reignite his Old Trafford career if his bad luck continues, particularly after the emergence of new signing Eric Bailly.
Judging by United’s defensive performance, they could have done with Jones, even if he will still be a little rusty on his return having played just 13 times in all competitions last season.
Mourinho picked an understrength team, omitting Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw, and Antonio Valencia, all of whom were rested for this weekend’s Premier League trip to Watford.
