Tottenham are refusing to be downhearted after their Wembley nightmare against Monaco.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men failed to live up to the grandeur of the occasion, going down 2-1 to the Ligue 1 side after a poor first half.
However, there is still plenty of time for them to turn things around – and Dele Alli insists the team’s confidence has not been dented by the result.
“We fancy ourselves against anyone,” he told Goal.com.
“We’re a confident side and we expect to win games, no matter who is in front of us. We let ourselves down in the first half against Monaco.
“We need to make sure we keep improving and win the next game. We usually bounce back well from a defeat and it’s important we pick ourselves up on Sunday against Sunderland. We have to make sure we learn from Monaco and take it into the next games.
“We’ve got some fantastic fans here at Tottenham and it’s a great club to play for and the whole team are sorry we didn’t win. But it’s important we pick ourselves up and keep learning from these experiences and make sure we win the next game.”
Spurs will have to hope they have better fortunes back at their regular home ground this weekend, though they can’t afford to let Wembley stop them from winning games.
Not only are all their Champions League games being played there this season, next season it will be home to their Premier League fixtures as well, so their opponents are bound to raise their game for the occasion.
Alli himself needs to up his game after an erratic start to the season, but another win against Sunderland could be just the antidote Spurs need.
