Tottenham were brought back down to earth with a thud as Monaco rained on their Wembley parade.
The Ligue 1 side escaped 85,00 Spurs fans with a 2-1 win, and while the venue made it a night to remember for the hosts, they conjured up a truly forgettable performance.
Toby Alderweireld scored the Lilywhites’ only goal, but elsewhere, there were some uninspiring performances from Erik Lamela, Harry Kane, and Dele Alli.
Lamela, Eric Dier, and Heung Min-Son were all substituted, but Mauricio Pochettino has now made the hilarious admission that he’d have liked to take his entire team off.
“If this was basketball, I would have taken them all off,” he told the Mirror.
“I think we showed a lack of passion today.
“We need to work, to show more hunger.”
It’s not the first time Pochettino has made that accusation. After the 5-1 defeat to Newcastle on the final day of last season, the Argentine lamented his side’s lack of drive to finish second, and with such a young side, it’s still clearly something that needs to be worked on.
Tottenham appeared to struggle with the size of the Wembley pitch, but perhaps it was the magnitude of the occasion that got the better of them. Their next Champions League game will be away to CSKA Moscow.
