Once Kevin de Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho had put Manchester City 2-0 up at Old Trafford, it was pretty clear there was no coming back for United.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic may have got them back into the game to make it 2-1, but in truth, City deserved to win after United’s defensive capitulation.
What will frustrate Jose Mourinho is that his side came out for the second half much improved and could have found an equaliser, but the damage was done in the first 45 minutes.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t actually Mourinho who United had to thank for their improvement. Of course, it was speculated that he must have given them one hell of a team talk, but The Sun have now revealed what actually went on inside the dressing room.
A United source told the newspaper of a massive row that erupted:
“The hairdryer came out for the first time this season, but it had nothing to do with Jose.
“The players could be heard shouting and arguing amongst themselves during the interval. Jose decided to let them blow off steam for a couple of minutes.”
Mourinho then attempted to calm them down because he was concerned if they lost their heads completely, things could get even worse in the second half.
Whatever was said clearly worked, though, so the Special One must be pleased that his players were so fired up, even if it wasn’t reflected in the result.
