Liverpool are keen to bring in Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.
That’s according to the Liverpool Echo, who are reporting that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp views the Dutchman as an alternative for one of his chief targets, Udinese’s Piotr Zielinski, who is now expected to join AC Milan.
Until recently, Tottenham were the only Premier League club being seriously linked with Wijanldum, but they appear to have baulked at the price tag being set by Newcastle.
The Magpies want £25million, having bought the player from PSV Eindhoven for £14.5million.
Manager Rafael Benitez is also desperate to retain some of his quality players as his side look to bounce back at the first time of asking, another reason for such a high price tag.
Spurs are unlikely to pay anywhere near that, but Liverpool just might. While Tottenham’s attack is virtually complete, the Reds need more pace and a winger who can score goals in the top flight – Wijnaldum got 11 last season despite Newcastle’s relegation – would be a huge asset.
