New Liverpool signing Loris Karius has hinted he will be the club’s number one goalkeeper next season.
According to Sky Sports, the German stopper has decided against going to the Olympics in Brazil because it would mean missing the first two games of the Premier League season, which he should be playing in.
“I spoke with the manager and we said that it doesn’t make sense for me to go to the Olympics as I would miss the first two league games of the season and of course I want to play in them”, he said.
Karius had been guaranteed a place in Germany’s first team, but with many athletes reluctant to go to the Olympics anyway because of the Zika virus, he has now opted to stay with Liverpool. In fact, he has already made his first appearance, playing in the 5-0 preseason win over Fleetwood, a further indication that he could be Klopp’s preferred choice.
Simon Mignolet is currently number one, but the Belgian had another erratic campaign last season and that’s obviously why Karius has been brought in.
Mignolet has welcomed the competition for places, insisting it will make him a better player, but he could now find it difficult to stake a claim in Klopp’s first XI.
