Mauricio Pochettino is considering bringing Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to White Hart Lane next season, according to the Daily Mail.
The winger scored 11 goals for Newcastle last season, though he was ultimately unable to keep them in the Premier League.
Yet, he may have come to Pochettino’s attention on the final day of the season when he scored a brace in the Magpies’ shock 5-1 win over Spurs, a result that denied the Lilywhites second place.
The Tottenham boss is understood to be keen on Wijnaldum because he could link up well with compatriot Vincent Janssen next season, that is, if Spurs are able to agree a deal for the AZ Alkmaar striker.
However, there is one major stumbling block, as Newcastle are reportedly demanding £25million for the player in order to make as much of a profit as possible, having signed him for £11million.
Roma and Everton are also interested, but the Serie A side are unlikely to tempt him because he favours staying in the Premier League.
Everton, unlike Spurs, can’t offer Champions League football, which gives Pochettino a further advantage.
Wijnaldum may be an expensive option, but it looks like Tottenham may have little choice, as their alternative target Antonio Sanabria now looks to be on his way to Real Betis.
