Manchester United are considering a surprise bid for Derby’s Will Hughes, according to the Sun.
Jose Mourinho is considering bringing him in not necessarily for the first team, but because the Englishman would boost the Red Devils’ number of homegrown players to fulfil the quota.
So far, all of Mourinho’s signings have been from abroad, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Sweden, Eric Bailly of the Ivory Coast, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all on their way to the north-west.
Hughes would only cost £7million, which is an added bonus, but Derby won’t accept any less because he still has two years left on his current contract.
The 21-year-old, who has been on the radar of Premier League clubs in the past but a move never materialised, could be tempted this time.
Derby missed out on promotion at the play-off semi-final stage, so it may be that Hughes has to move elsewhere to experience top flight football.
The England under-21 international might not be part of Mourinho’s immediate plans even if he signs on at Old Trafford, but he is definitely one for the future.
