Arsene Wenger has reportedly turned his attention to Islam Slimani as his main transfer target now that Jamie Vardy has turned Arsenal down, according to reports in Portugal.
Abola are reporting that the Gunners want the Sporting Lisbon player, who scored 27 goals in the Primeira Liga last season, though it is unclear how much he will cost them.
Slimani did have a €30million release clause in his contract, but now that it has expired, Lisbon could potentially hold out for more.
There is a danger that Arsenal could be held to ransom this summer, as the Vardy snub has highlighted to other clubs Wenger’s desperation to sign a striker.
Yet, the reality is that is should not have come down to this summer at all, as he should have acted much quicker in previous transfer windows.
Arsenal fans have been pleading with the manager to boost his attacking options for some time, so if Slimani doesn’t arrive soon, Wenger’s standing among the supporters is only going to get worse.
