Cesar Azipilicueta could turn down a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, according to French source Le10Sport.
The Spaniard was reportedly the subject of interest from the Red Devils, with several sources suggesting he could leave Chelsea after a disappointing season at Stamford Bridge, both individually and for the whole team.
Under Mourinho, the 26-year-old won both the Premier League and the Capital One Cup in 2015, which had prompted talk that the new United manager could bring in his former defender.
United need to strengthen in the full-back positions, as Mourinho may question the ability of Italy international Matteo Darmian and Timothy Fosu-Mensah is still young and is being edged into the first team gradually.
Azpilicueta can play on the left or the right, so he could also have replaced Marcus Rojo, who failed to impress under Louis van Gaal last season.
Yet, Le10Sport believe that Azpilicueta does not want to join United, while he could also turn down a big-money move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Fortunately for United, Luke Shaw should be back to full fitness this summer, so Mourinho may be able to rely on him instead.
It’s believed Azpilicueta favours a move back to his native Spain, with Athletic Bilbao a possible destination.
Now that Bilbao are keeping Aymeric Laporte, if they can get Azpilicueta back to his best, then they will certainly have a defence to be reckoned with in La Liga next season.
