Simon Mignolet has confirmed that he plans to stay at Liverpool despite the arrival of Loris Karius.
Belgian stopper Mignolet must have been concerned when Reds boss Jurgen Klopp bought Karius in, particularly as many fans have been calling for his head following some high-profile mistakes.
Having only signed a new deal in January, Mignolet has revealed to Sky Sports that he is looking forward to having more competition, which he believes is healthy for the team.
“Competition for places, you’ll always have it at the highest level and it’s something that is really good in this team”, he said.
Ironically, Mignolet is away at Euro 2016, where he is unquestionably Belgium’s number one, even if he could soon be deposed at Anfield.
Karius is only 22-years-old, but all the indications are that Klopp intends to instal him in the first team straight away.
The German manager showed towards the end of last season that he’s not afraid to give young players a chance, so even if Mignolet isn’t outwardly worried, perhaps he should be deep down.
