Going into Euro 2016, Harry Kane was expected to be England’s main man.
Within days of the Three Lions getting their campaign underway, though, Kane’s place is under fire.
The Sun report that senior figures in the England camp have approached boss Roy Hodgson asking him to drop the Spurs striker in favour of Jamie Vardy.
The paper has suggested that Kane’s teammates are concerned that he is mentally and physically exhausted after a gruelling Premier League season in which he played almost every game for Tottenham.
Their words are set to be in vain, however, because Kane is due to start again in the Wales game.
That’s no surprise given that Hodgson didn’t even bring Vardy on when England’s need was greatest.
The same source did not suggest which players had spoken to Hodgson, but it is understood to have been out of concern, rather than malice.
It means the pressure is on, more than ever, for Kane to make an impact against Wales as if he fails to get on the scoresheet again, the fans, if not the players, could be baying for blood.
