Diego Costa is now understood to be Atletico Madrid’s main summer transfer target, according to the Mirror.
His namesake Diego Simeone is intent on bringing Costa back to La Liga, where he first made his reputation as one of Europe’s most formidable strikers.
After a miserable season at Chelsea, it may well be time for the Spaniard to move on, particularly after he was dropped from Vincente del Bosque’s Euro 2016 squad because of concerns over his fitness.
Simeone can’t promise him a spot back in the national team, as he hasn’t exactly been able to improve Fernando Torres’ fortunes in that area, but you would bet on Atleti’s eccentric manager to get Costa back on form nonetheless.
Chelsea are being linked with fellow Spaniard Alvaro Morata and if he is to become their main striker, then Costa is hardly going to sit around as a substitute.
He has scored 36 goals in 74 appearances for the Blues, and although Antonio Conte reportedly wants to keep him, Simeone is going to lengths to ensure Costa feels more wanted in Madrid.
