Euro 2016: tournament marred by violence in Marseille

euro 2016

Euro 2016 will begin amid heightened terror fears and will go down as one of most nervy major tournaments in recent memory.

However, extra security hasn’t been able to prevent a night’s hooliganism between English and French fans.

England fans in Marseille were controlled by police with tear gas, with several taken to hospital following the violence.

There have been conflicting accounts of what started the kick-off.

One eyewitness we spoke to insisted England fans were set upon by a gang screaming ‘get the English’,but it has been difficult to corroborate that.

The Mirror, meanwhile, report that locals were perturbed by England fans chanting ‘ISIS, where are you?’, a reference to the terror warnings.

Locals were thought to be particularly angered because Marseille has a large Muslim population.

According to the same report, one England fan was found lying in a pool of blood.

French police are hugely concerned that the violence may continue.

England fans have been warned they will not be able to buy alcohol in the run-up to their most important group game against Wales, but the truth is that there are clearly much bigger issues than the police may be able to handle.
