IT SEEMS a bit far-fetched but Manchester United are exploring the potential of a sensational move to bring Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi to Old Trafford, according to Sportsmail.
However, the Argentina forward would not make the switch ahead of next season, the move would be completed in time for the 2017-18 campaign – on the proviso United qualify for the Champions League.
Sportsmail claim the Red Devils have made two approaches in the last three weeks in an attempt to gauge whether a move for the four-time Ballon d’Or winner is possible.
Without doubt, any deal for the 28-year-old – whose current deal at Barca ends in 2018 – would smash the existing world record transfer fee of £85.3million that Real Madrid paid Tottenham to secure the services of Gareth Bale in 2013.
The Daily Mail revealed Messi will require certain assurances if he is to remain at Barcelona, with the player apparently becoming increasingly ‘frustrated and hurt’ by the media circus in Spain that has surrounded a legal case investigating his tax affairs.
Although sources close to Messi refused to rule out a move, it would be a major shock if the diminutive forward opted to leave the Nou Camp where he’s scored 453 goals in 531 games since arriving from Newell’s Old Boys back in 2001.
