Pep Guardiola could bring Dortmund duo to Manchester City

Pep Guardiola doesn’t officially take over at Manchester City until July, but he has already lined up a number of exciting transfer targets.

The Daily Mail believe that Borussia Dortmund pair Ilkay Gundogan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are high on Guardiola’s list, though both are also being linked with a host of top clubs across Europe.

For example, Gundogan is also being eyed by Barcelona, but City must do all they can to secure his services.

Aubameyang would undoubtedly be a big coup, having notched up 25 goals and 5 assists in the Bundesliga alone this season, but City’s need is greatest in midfield, not up front.

In attack, Sergio Aguero is going to be the star man for the foreseeable future, while emerging star Kelechi Iheanacho and England man Raheem Sterling provide further options.

The midfield, meanwhile, could do with a little more sturdiness.

Gundogan is a box-to-box midfielder with abundant experience at the top level, also playing for Germany’s national side.

With Yaya Toure almost certainly on the move this summer, City’s midfield will be left with a gaping hole that Gundogan would go a long way towards plugging.

Like Toure, he can offer plenty going forward, while also offering cover for the defence.

Given the Citizens’ abundant resources, Guardiola may well be given a free reign on transfers and be able to sign whoever he likes.

If he is forced to cut back, though, in order to bring City in line with Financial Fair Play regulations, he may have to be more selective about who he brings in.

In a situation where City have to choose, Gundogan must absolutely be the priority.
