LIVERPOOL look like missing out on winger Dries Mertens who is believed to be close to extending his contract with Napoli to 2020.
The Belgium international was strongly linked with the Anfield club during the January transfer window and was expected to be back on Reds boss Jurgen Klopp’s radar in the summer after managing just four Serie A starts this season.
However, Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb claim he is in negotiations with Napoli over extending his deal.
The 28-year-old’s current contract runs out in 2018, but despite his limited playing time this campaign, Mertens appears keen to stay in Naples for the forceable future.
Recently he said: “I think that the coach and the staff still consider me to be an important part of the team.
“It’s a privilege to play for a club where (Diego) Maradona is a fan even if I don’t know him personally.”
