JUST when Manchester United fans thought it couldn’t get any worse …
Louis van Gaal’s miserable time in charge at Old Trafford hit a new – and almost unimaginable – low as United crashed to a humiliating 2-1 defeat at previously little-known Danish outfit Midtjylland in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 32 tie.
Stuart Mathieson of the Manchester Evening News was in no doubt what the response from the men in charge at Old Trafford should be.
Mathieson said: “Manchester United owners the Glazers and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward cannot let this slow lingering death drag on any longer.
Louis van Gaal’s credibility as Manchester United manager is in tatters and United’s own reputation is crumbling frighteningly before the Old Trafford hierarchy’s eyes.
The Reds became the laughing stock of Europe in Denmark beaten by a team who were only formed in 1999 when United were a super power on the continent.
A club who used to beat Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League totally humiliated by Midtjylland in the Europa League is completely unacceptable.”
It’s hard to disagree and League One Shrewsbury must be licking their lips at the prospect of United’s visit for their FA Cup fifth round clash on Monday.
Van Gaal will no doubt point to a lengthy injury list but still, on paper at least, this was a mismatch of monumental proportion. The only thing the clubs have in common is that they both begin with the letter ‘M’ – other than that, they’re worlds apart in every sense.
Midtjylland, a club only formed in 1999 – the same year United claimed their memorable treble (oh, how Red Devils fans must yearn for just one piece of silverware now!) – hadn’t played in 71 days due to their winter break but still they managed to get the better of Van Gaal’s side.
Given the importance of the match for the Premier League side – winning the Europa League is fast becoming United’s only realistic hope of playing in the Champions League next season – it was arguably a worse result than the 4-0 League Cup drubbing at the hands of MK Dons in the early days of Van Gaal’s reign.
United fans, is this the lowest the club has been since Sir Alex Ferguson retired?

Yes it’s the lowest point since SAF but it’s going lower. Man U are practically in free fall and they will continue down until Woodward has been replaced.
