Man United’s waiting game on German to go on for a bit longer

IT ALMOST happened two years ago, but Toni Kroos could finally become a Manchester United player.

The midfielder has spoken in recent days of a ‘dream’ move to Old Trafford after a frustrating season at Real Madrid where he found himself out of favour under Rafael Benitez.

The Germany World Cup winner came close to joining the Red Devils in 2014 when David Moyes was in charge of United but the move eventually collapsed when Moyes was sacked, with Real Madrid subsequently snapping up the then Bayern Munich star.

But it appears a move to the Premier League is very much back on, according to the Daily Star who reported:

“United are now leading the race to sign the 26-year-old while Manchester City are also interested.

“It’s said Kroos is on Pep Guardiola’s wishlist for when he takes over at the Etihad.”

City’s interest would certainly be a blow to United with their cross-town rivals likely to be able to offer Champions League football next season – something the struggling Red Devils don’t look like being able to match.

Kroos, with his ability to spray the ball around from midfield and retain possession, is just what United need – and have needed ever since Paul Scholes hung up his boots.

However, the situation may not be quite as clear-cut now as the classy German has enjoyed something of a revival in Madrid since Zinedine Zidane was appointed manager last month following the axing of Benitez. Even before he took over, Zidane openly expressed his admiration for Kroos, saying: “Toni is perfect for Real Madrid. He’s the piece of the puzzle that we were missing for a long time and he fits the Real Madrid philosophy perfectly.”

That doesn’t sound like a manager who’s looking to sell a player.

While we think Kroos’ style would be perfectly suited to the English game, there looks to be a fair way to go before any move takes place and United fans shouldn’t get too excited.

That said, do Manchester United supporters think the club should go all out to try to sign Kroos or are there better options?
