You have to feel a little sorry for Louis van Gaal right now. Millions of pounds a year in salary will of course soften the pain.
But we can’t help but think that, by showing what he considers to be loyalty to LvG, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is hanging the Dutchman out to dry.
Manchester United appears to be a total mess at the moment and who knows where the club will be in 6 months, in terms of manager, players and position.
But LvG did clear up one thing in his weekly press conference ahead of the ultimate banana skin at what will be a rocking iPro Stadium in the FA Cup 4th round game at Derby on Friday evening.
The big question was posed by one intrepid reporter.
Did you offer to resign after the Southampton defeat?
LvG: ‘I think that I don’t have mentioned that ever’
In other words a categoric ‘no’.
He then went on another roundabout rant at the press for insinuating that a manager who has performed this badly at a club the size of Manchester United, might get sacked.
Van Gaal looked defiant in his interview and it’s easy to see why he’s not happy. But he also has to accept that he is paid huge money to make Manchester United successful. Instead he seems outraged with his treatment.
It’s just got beyond a joke now and it’s difficult to fathom why he has been kept at the club for so long. Surely Ed Woodward doesn’t seriously believe that Manchester United are going to suddenly go on the sort of winning run, under Louis, that will make us all forget how bad it got? The LvG formula doesn’t work for United. Simple as that.
