We wouldn’t be at all surprised if it happened and the ever eager Daily Mirror has reported, in the latest news cycle, that:
Manchester United’s Louis van Gaal pondering quitting at the end of THIS season
The 64-year-old’s loved ones are concerned about the pressure he is under and leaving a year early would clear the way for Jose Mourinho to take over
Van Gaal came in to the club in the summer of 2014 on a wave of hype created in part by himself and, of course, by his excellent record at The World Cup, where he took an average Holland side, enlivened by two top forwards, to the semi-finals.
His time at Manchester United couldn’t be described as an outright success. Indeed, in recent times, it’s felt like an outright failure as the club won just 1 Premier League game in 8 before better results, if not better performances, in 2016. This year Manchester United have won 3 and drawn 1 of their 4 fixtures.
But, without seeming ageist, the job of returning Manchester United to the top appears ever more suited to a younger coach who doesn’t have retirement and a wonderful holiday home in Portugal with the love of his life on the agenda in the not too distant future.
Van Gaal will always remain a top coach and his professionalism is not in doubt. But perhaps he has bitten off more than he can chew at a time when Manchester United face their biggest challenge in a couple of decades. With the likes of Klopp and Guardiola coming to manage in England (and let’s not discount the promise of Pochettino at Spurs either) we can’t help thinking that United should bring in a new manager sooner rather than later – a man who can face these challenges with a long-term strategy.
Without wishing to labour the point, Manchester United would do extremely well to employ the services of Jose Mourinho.
