Newcastle have been amongst the busiest Premier League sides in the the transfer window so far but they don’t look close to completing their business just yet, with reports today that the club is still in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over the potential signing of Andros Townsend.
The England international, of 10 caps and 3 goals, has fallen out of favour under Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and Newcastle could be his next club, as Sky Sports reports:
Sky sources have told us that Newcastle are still in talks with Tottenham over Andros Townsend.
The report states that talks are still at an early stage and his move could yet be a loan or a permanent deal.
When we first wrote about this one we suggested that Townsend would be a good signing for Newcastle. But some readers are clearly yet to be convinced after letting rip on soccersweep about the potential transfer. ‘The ultimate headless chicken’ was one description of the player.
But we still think that he would be a super signing for Newcastle and one that the fans would quickly warm to.
An ever more important quality in this league is pace – we have seen the impact that the pace of Wijnaldum has had on this team and the league already – and if The Toon can add some more in January they should go for it.
Townsend is lightning quick and carries the ball beautifully. Sure, he is a little rough around the edges, but if he can be coached into keeping things simple and playing the early, short pass more frequently, we think that he could be a wonderful investment.
Let’s have another look at him in action.

Townsend has the potential to “come good” at Newcastle. He has skills, but needs to learn how to use them to benefit the team. This can probably be accomplished to the benefit of both teams.
The best for all teams and both players would be to trade Townsend for Berahino. That could restart the careers of both players. Regretably however, the belligerent self- aggrandizing attitudes that seems to haunt both players is also one held by Mr. Peace, so it’s not likely to happen.
