Newcastle United have had fresh talks with the agent of Andros Townsend with a view to a January move according to The Chronicle. They say:

Magpies have held fresh talks with Andros Townsend’s agent

Out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur and England star Andros Townsend could take Newcastle’s spending to £28million this January

Despite his recent troubles at Tottenham this could be a great coup for Newcastle for a player who is still highly regarded by England manager Roy Hodgson.

Townsend has played 10 times for England, since a superb debut against Montenegro in 2013, and scored 3 goals.

At club level he has played 86 times and scored 10 goals for Spurs.

But he hasn’t always been in favour at the club and, since 2009, he has been out on loan no less than 9 times.

Newcastle obviously mean business in this window, having already signed Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet in January.

Townsend would offer great pace and a genuine outlet on either flank. The left-footer tends to play on the right but could easily adapt to a position on the left if required.

We think that this would be an excellent signing for the club and at 24 we still haven’t seen the best of Andros Townsend. With a transfer fee of around £12m being mooted Townsend represents great value for money too.

Let’s see the England international in action.

Newcastle fans: would Townsend go straight into the first team?

Townsend is the ultimate headless chicken. He makes Obertan look like a member of Mensa. Terrible stats with very little end product and a very frustrating player who takes daft shots when team mates are in far better positions. Often injured and was loaned out 11 times. Hmmm…
Pochettino is no fool and spurs must be rubbing their hands as we get stitched up again with another poor decision.

I think you’re being harsh there.
      Townsend has quality.
Although I like Poch he likes to play a rigid purely tactics based system.
There’s no room for players to try anything outside of that, and Townsend doesn’t fit.
As for stats they mean nothing. They’re for basketball and the like not football. Walcott’s stats were better than Bales a season before Bale went to Spain, but anyone could see who was better.
