We have to say that the newspapers may have jumped the gun on this one and we will wait until the player is pictured joyfully clutching a Liverpool shirt and smiling even more broadly than Jurgen Klopp, before we completely believe it.
But a swell of newspaper reports have suggested, in the latest news cycle, that a deal for Brazil international Alexandre Pato has been agreed.
The Daily Star writes:
Liverpool agree next transfer deal: Striker set to join after snubbing interest elsewhere
LIVERPOOL have agreed a deal for Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato, reports from Italy claim.
The Independent says:
Liverpool have agreed an £11m move for Corinthians striker Alexandre Pato, according to reports.
And ITV.com writes:
Rumours: Liverpool agree deal to buy Brazilian forward Alexandre Pato
The story seems to centre on an Italian journalist, Alfredo Pedula, who says that a 15m Euro deal has been agreed and that the player expressed a preference for Liverpool.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this story is the fact that Pato is still only 26.
He seems to have been on the scene for time immemorial and made his debut for Brazil all the way back in 2008 when he was heralded as the next big thing in Brazilian football.
His move to Italy and AC Milan happened in 2007 where he spent 6 seasons and scored 63 in 150 games. He’s played 28 times for Brazil, scoring a decent 10 goals, but his form waned to the point that he returned to Brazil in 2013. But he rediscovered his shooting boots at Corinthians and Sao Paolo.
Not an out and out number 9, Pato is more of a schemer who creates as well as scoring. He’s technically excellent but we do have reservations about how he will cope with the physical demands of English football if he does indeed sign for Liverpool.
Let’s see him in full flight.
Liverpool fans: would you like to get this one over the line in January?
