Spanish Media: Pep Guardiola had sights firmly set on managing Manchester United

Spanish media outlet Marca has set the cat amongst the pigeons – sort of – by suggesting that Pep Guardiola has had a long-held desire to manage Manchester United.

The Spaniard, who is pretty much the hottest property in football management right now, will soon make a decision about where he coaches next, after deciding against renewing his contract at Bayern Munchen.

And the report states that:

City, however, are not the original club that football romantic Guardiola aspired to as a man of great respect for badges and traditions. The destination that he had his sights firmly set on when he started enjoying coaching success was the red half of Manchester, rather than the blue.

It’s a very interesting thought and may still have some bearing on that big, pending decision of the maestro.

But the source is also at pains to point out that Guardiola is highly likely to join Manchester City instead of Manchester United in one of the ‘worst kept secrets’ in modern football times.

In a short space of time Guardiola has won so much as a manager. He guided Barcelona to three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies in his four seasons in charge of the Spanish giants.

And he has managed back to back titles in his two seasons at Bayern Munchen, with a third straight championship expected this year and Bayern in great form with the Champions League knockout stages looming.

But the big test will surely be in England where any one of 5 teams can take the title in the most competitive league in the world.

So will he be at Manchester United or Manchester City come next season: what do you think?
