Manchester United: Rooney move will strengthen the team

Changes required

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is known for the odd unconventional decision.

He went for 5 at the back when he first started at the club. He moved the wingers Young and Valencia into defence and he has also has played Daley Blind at centre back as well as boding a raft of little-known youngsters.

But how about this for another maverick move? Play Wayne Rooney in central midfield as he did for the final throes of the PSV game and at times last year?

Regular readers will know how highly we rate Rooney. But his explosiveness has all but deserted him at the age of 30.

What he does still have is vision and fantastic passing ability. He hits the sort of wonderful diagonal ball that has largely been missing since The Ginger Prince retired. And surely now it’s time to utilise it.

LvG can buy as many players as he likes but there remains a massive disconnect between defence and attack. Manchester United really don’t look like a unified team.

By getting rid of a defensive midfielder and moving Rooney alongside Schweinsteiger/Schneiderlin/Carrick, Manchester United can redress the balance.

They desperately need more creativity in an engine room which only ever seems to pass sideways. And this lack of adventure and vision is causing problems throughout the team.

LvG needs to make changes or he will soon lose the support of the fans.

For our money, he should get rid of a holding player, put Rooney in midfield and add another forward to the side.

Manchester United fans: can Rooney extend his career in midfield?
