Not Pato: Liverpool linked with another talented playmaker

All the transfer talk, in relation to Liverpool, over the last day has been about Alexandre Pato to Anfield.

While there is still some uncertainty about the verity of the sound bites, the president of Corinthians is quoted as saying:

‘There is an agreement in principle with Liverpool for the transfer in the coming weeks,’

‘Pato had long expressed a desire to return to Europe.’

But Sky Sports draws our attention to an alternative bit of speculation coming out of Italy that Liverpool are interested in signing another playmaker.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will look to add Empoli midfielder Riccardo Saponara to his squad in January, according to Tuttosport.

The 23 year old attacking midfielder and winger is said to be valued in the region of £14m.

Saponara flourished in is early career at Empoli, where he played 83 times and scored 12 goals.

His form drew the attention of AC Milan and he went there for two years in 2013. But he only played 8 times for Milan and returned to Empoli in 2015.

Since retuning their he has been on fire with 10 goals in 23 games.

He’s a lovely looking player with great feet and groundspeed but enough upper body strength to suggest that he would be able to hold his own on a physical level in The Premier League.

Let’s take a look at the Italian U21 International (22 games and 3 goals) in action.

Liverpool fans: can he improve the first XI?
