If new Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is going to get anywhere near the top four this season he is at least going to need a full complement of players to pick from.
The injuries to Joe Gomez and Danny Ings gave him a bad start and Daniel Sturridge still doesn’t seem to have completely shaken off his problems.
So the last thing that the Liverpool boss will need now is another injury scare to one of his main forwards.
But The Daily Mail reports that Christian Benteke sustained some damage after scoring that fine goal in the 1-1 draw with Southampton.
Liverpool striker Christian Benteke doubtful for crunch clash with Chelsea after £32m man suffers another injury setback
The damage this time was apparently to his medial ligament and it’s safe to say that he won’t be risked for The Capital One Cup 4th Round game against Bournemouth at Anfield on Wednesday evening.
The big race now is to get him fit for the crucial game at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea at the weekend.
With Chelsea rocking Liverpool will see this as a great opportunity to get one over on their rivals for the top four and perhaps push Jose out of the exit door.
And you would have thought that Benteke would be central to Klopp’s game plan in such a tough away match.
Benteke has scored 3 goals in 8 games since joining Liverpool in the summer for around £32.5m.
