Liverpool come into this one on the back of two frustrating draws in Jurgen Klopp’s first couple of games in charge of his new club.
Frustration not just because of the results, but the profligacy shown by Liverpool in front of goal, which has left Klopp to remark:
“It is important to get more stable but I saw the pressure on the players when they missed a chance,” he said.
“I saw some players they were so stiff in their minds… ‘Now we have to shoot’… we have to decide better [when it comes to] shooting, passing. When we go in the box we have to be better.
We still think that Liverpool played with more creativity and purpose than they did in the final throes of Brendan Rodgers’ ultimately failed tenure at the club.
And Klopp will hope that it’s third time luck for his Liverpool side today.
But they are facing an excellent team in good form.
Southampton is a wonderfully run club from top to bottom and the raft of player sales over the last few years (several to Liverpool) has done little to weaken them.
In Sadio Mane they have a young wizard who is playing out of his skin right now.
He is surely Southampton’s main danger man and Liverpool will have to keep him quiet if they want to take the points here.
Another fascinating Premier League game in prospect then.
