Manchester United: Rooney history to repeat itself against Manchester City?

Time to raise the bar

It would of course be little more than coincidence if it were to happen.

But we so often see these sorts of spooky occurrences take place in football.

Because, on February 12th 2011, the circumstances were very similar.

Manchester United were battling Manchester City for the title and Wayne Rooney was having a stinker of a season.

His normally velvety touch had deserted him. Indeed he often looked as if he had breeze blocks on his pegs.

Manchester United were totally carrying their long-term talisman.

But then, in the 78th minute, he silenced all the doubters (many of whom thought he was a spent force at 26) with that classic bicycle kick to win the the game.

Perhaps history is about to repeat itself. And for all the wonderful new players that the club has signed, you still feel that it will be almost impossible for Manchester United to win silverware if Rooney doesn’t hit top form.

But he needs a great game to spark his confidence and get the forward line playing with real speed, penetration and fluency again.

Rooney - no service

Rooney – no service

Manchester United once more have a superb front line in terms of talent. But the combined current output of Memphis, Martial, Rooney and Mata is still way below the sum of its parts.

These four should be bewitching us. Instead they are boring us, and the opponent, into submission.

soccersweep feels that Rooney’s improved form can be the catalyst for a return to the great attacking play of the past.

We keep waiting for it to happen and perhaps we will finally get an attacking performance for Manchester United fans to be proud of on Sunday.

They will certainly need to show far better understanding and coherence up top if United want to take the points and top spot in The Premier League against a very good side.

Prepare to see this clip many many times in the coming days!
