Regular readers of soccersweep will know that we have been supporters of Louis van Gaal during his tenure as Manchester United manager.
But with the Dutchman currently looking likely to retire at the end of next season we are beginning to wonder how his time at the club will be remembered.
It’s already unlikely that he will be remembered as a serial winner as Manchester United are yet to win a trophy on his watch. Furthermore, the resounding defeat to Arsenal illustrated that there is still long way to go.
His performance this season will be crucial in determining whether he stays at the club and he may ultimately be commemorated as someone who steadied the ship before the next great era.
Ryan Giggs has been widely tipped as the next head coach of Manchester United, even by Van Gaal himself.
But we wonder whether he is the man for the job just yet. Is he the grizzled managerial competitor that can make this team purr again or would any top manager be required to gain experience in a lesser job first?
We may well be about to find out and few Manchester United fans would refute any decision to make Giggs the boss.
But we instinctively feel that the perfect solution would be Diego Simeone.
Here is a man who took on the might of Real Madrid and Barca – and won.
Atletico upset the odds by taking La Liga in 2014 and they also reached the CL final that season, only to concede in the penultimate minute of injury time at the end of the 90.
Atletico are still highly competitive but we feel that Simeone is coming toward the end of his time there and that he will take one of the very top jobs in football next.
His teams, like those of LvG, are compact and technically astute.
But the speed of play that Simoene engenders would perhaps pay better dividends in England than the style of the Dutchman.
It’s high energy, high press and high reward with Simoene’s team. And the passion that he shows at the side of the pitch just seems like a perfect fit for Manchester United.
Simeone will need a new project before long and we feel that Manchester United would be the ideal destination for the Argentine – his style is suited to England and he could make United serial winners again.
