Not good enough

Groundhog Day FC suffered another depressingly familiar result on Tuesday night as they were humbled 3-2 on home turf by European minnows Olympiakos.

The performance looked identical to so many Arsenal games in Europe over the last decade, where they looked inventive going forward but didn’t finish their chances, while leaving the back door wide open to Greek raids.

Thankfully Arsene Wenger finally submitted to public pressure in the summer and bought a top goalkeeper after years off noodling around with substandard keepers like David Ospina.

But, what did Wenger do in this must-win game? He omitted Petr Cech and played Ospina of course.

And the media and Arsenal fans alike were quick to jump on the bandwagon of ire after this one.

Famous Arsenal fan, Piers Morgan Tweeted:

The Mirror Tweets:

Arsenal to solve defensive problems … with another attacking midfielder

And former Arsenal star Charlie Nicholas said:

“The manager has to carry the can. He made five changes from the Leicester game and we always talk about momentum.

“They had some momentum after the weekend but the way that they lost was criminal. Wenger has to take full responsibility for playing Ospina ahead of Cech.

And Per Mertesacker offered little excuse:

Normally Arsenal would have a couple of easy opponents up next. After a few wins Wenger would return to his smug and ridiculously optimistic self until the next big opponent and the next big loss.

But, with Manchester United up next, followed by a two week international break, another defeat could actually leave the Arsenal manager with no excuses and closer than ever to the exit door.

Arsenal fans: time for a change?
