Many believe that the potential signing of Anthony Martial won’t be the last of Manchester United’s window.
After a really tepid start to the season – where Manchester United have looked solid at the back, apart from the goalkeeper, but toothless up front – they clearly need more speed in their offensive line.
When you also consider that Manchester United have let go of RvP, Nani, Chicharito, Adnan Januzaj and Falcao this summer, the front line looks even thinner.
But signing players of the requisite quality is not an easy task – especially on the last day of the window.
But that right side looks particularly frail with just the diminutive Juan Mata patrolling it, when he should quite clearly be pulling the strings in the middle of the park.
If Manchester United don’t manage another signing today then perhaps they will use Martial himself as their other winger this season.
He’s used to playing in the wider areas, though usually from the left.
But he would add that much needed pace and penetration down the wings, from where he could learn his trade with less pressure on his shoulders than if he was asked to carry the goalscoring burden at number 9.
What Manchester United need more than anything right now is pace.
For that reason we applaud the potential signing of Martial.
But if no one else is signed in this window then we feel that Martial would be far better deployed out wide, on the opposite wing to Memphis, than through the centre at this point of his career.
With no more singings, Manchester United should set up like so.
