Manchester United’s Top 3 Performers on tour

Depay: Needs game time

Promising

Having witnessed all of Manchester United’s pre-season games in America, we feel that Louis van Gaal can be reasonably encouraged – particularly by the performances of some of his new players. Here is our Top 3 from Pre-season.

Matteo Darmian

In his debut he gave the ball away far too cheaply and we wondered whether Antonio Valencia would get the nod against Tottenham. But we have no such worries now and Darmian could reasonably be regarded as Manchester United’s best performer in pre-season.

He’s got everything that you would want from a modern full back. He’s a good defender – strong in the tackle and diligent.

He’s really calm under pressure, is a great athlete and his pace makes him a very good attacking weapon down that right flank. Darmian also showed, in the last game against PSG, that he can play on the left too.

Luke Shaw

Finally this lad looks as if he is going to explode at Manchester United.

He took a fitness coach on holiday with him and he has come back looking fitter and stronger than last season.

He’s a brave, skilful and buccaneering full back who is talented enough to play as a left winger – such an exciting player with a big career ahead of him at Manchester United.

Memphis Depay

It was a toss up between Memphis and Carrick for the third spot. Morgan Schneiderlin was excellent too.

Memphis flitted in and out of games.

But he showed the moments of genius which can open up the tightest of games. A world class, Cantonaesque flick here and an amazing turn there.

He also showed a turn of pace which this team is desperate for.

When he finds his feet at Manchester United he is going to be a superstar.
