Never a Dull Moment: Newcastle close to bizarre signing

Odd

Newcastle are one of those clubs that seems incapable of avoiding controversy for too long.

Steve McClaren came on board this summer to howls of derision from some Newcastle fans.

But, especially with the signing of Georgina Wijnaldum, he has made a decent fist of the transfer window so far in our estimations.

But latest reports suggest that Newcastle are set to sign a decent looking full back. Nothing strange there until you dig a little deeper. The Daily Mail reports:

Newcastle set to sign Anderlecht defender Chancel Mbemba for £8.5m… despite him having four reported birth dates ranging from 1988 to 1995

And Sky reports this afternoon that:

Chancel Mbemba arrives for medical at Newcastle United

The DR Congo international of some 17 caps has been at Anderlecht since 2012.

He’s played with great consistency there, scoring 6 goals in 56 league games in Belgium.

But the age thing is rather bizarre. He could be as old as 27 but Newcastle are signing him on the understanding that he is just 20.

We suppose that the most important thing is that he plays well for Newcastle.

If he helps to shore up a hitherto dodgy back line then noone will give a hoot how old he is.

Let’s take a look at the lad in action.

Newcastle fans: do you believe that Steve McClaren is doing a good job for The Toon in the transfer market this summer and where else does he need to strengthen the side before the start of the season?

Papers like the daily mail love to over blow issues like this, if you had done any research you would know Anderlecht had done various tests to actually determine his age. Do you really believe a club would go through with a £8mil transfer without being shown adequate proof of his age after all the controversy surrounding it. Basically your article is click bait bs – good job.

A stunning piece of prose, second only to Tony Blair’s memoirs in factual merit. Keep selling that soul.
