Manchester City have freshened up for the new season with the signings of Raheem Sterling and Fabien Delph.

And while the former scored on his debut for the club, after just three minutes, you get the sense that the spending hasn’t ended there.

Manchester City are so fantastic to watch going forward but they still haven’t got it quite right at the back.

At his best, Vincent Kompany almost did the job of two men.

But injuries have dampened his form to a degree and his partners, Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala, haven’t always been the most consistent performers beside him.

Demichelis has settled but at 34 can’t have too much football left in him.

So perhaps there is strength in the rumour that Manchester City are at the head of the queue for the superb Nicolas Otamendi.

City have had great success with Argentinians – Pablo Zabaleta and Sergio Aguero chief amongst them – and Otamendi would represent another solid addition.

The Express reports that Manchester City are now in pole position to land the 27 year old.

The lad has become a regualar for Argentina over the last year and was one of the stars of La Liga last season, his first for Valencia, where he scored 6 goals in 38 games – not at all bad for a central defender.

Let’s take look at him in action.

Kompany suffered with injuries last season and was always playing catch up, just when he got back to fitness, he got injured again. Also, we played a more attcking formation last season and, with neither Demichelis and Mangala hitting the heights, he was left exposed too often. I’m sure Mangala will be better for a season in the prem and a signing like Otamendi will help all the more.
